Hello!
Thanks for taking the time to read, listen, or watch what I have to say. I hope it’s brought you (or will bring you) real value towards your career and life. These days it’s pretty easy, and comfortable, to be anonymous, but I think it’s important for you to know a bit more about me before investing any more time into what I have to say.
I started writing years ago when I was a new engineering manager working at The New York Times. My first blog was about being an Introverted Engineer, but more specifically about management and early stage leadership.
Since then I’ve grown and learned quite a bit. For one, I decided to pursue a MBA at Rutgers Business School as a means to really focus on engineering leadership. That decision requires a whole blog post by itself, but what I got from it was a formal focus on engineering leadership and organizational strategy, along with how to be an effective mentor and coach. It was a long process, made even more challenging by my family and career growing, but was well worth it.
My tenure at the Times gave me unique leadership opportunities that I’ll always be grateful for. The privilege to work directly with members of the Masthead, is one of them, being the representative for engineering to lead the efforts to create a new and improved communication and conduct strategy that was adopted across the entire company. I was also fortunate to be one of the engineering leaders responsible for building and transforming the Times’ subscription growth strategy, which resulted in me overseeing two large engineering groups focused on subscriber retention and growth platforms.
While the Times gave me experience representing one of the most prestigious brands known around the globe, my next venture would have me working on a product used by over a billion in almost every country.
I joined Meta partly to diversify my engineering leadership experience and to work on engineering challenges at a scale not found at many other places. My background in both growth strategies and video technology meant I was well qualified to join the engineering leadership group responsible for growing short form video on one of Meta’s flagship apps, Instagram.
At Instragram I’ve seen how high the bar can be set for engineering and have used this opportunity to tap into a much larger network of engineering leaders, to bring more wisdom, experience, and thought into what I do and write about. My hope is to bring everything I’ve learned over the past couple decades to you and everyone else who reads what I write or listens to what I speak about.
So that’s a bit about me…
